Bankruptcies in Finland: what bankruptcy means, where the data comes from and how to find the right company

Bankruptcy is a proceeding in which all the assets of an insolvent company are used to pay its debts. The district court declares the company bankrupt, and the stages of the proceeding are published publicly in the trade register and the Official Gazette – from the opening of the bankruptcy to the conclusion of the proceeding.

What do the proceeding statuses mean?

Bankruptcy opened (the district court has declared the company bankrupt) · Bankruptcy lapsed (the proceeding lapsed for lack of funds) · Bankruptcy concluded (the proceeding completed) · Restructuring (a reorganisation procedure as an alternative to bankruptcy).

Where does the data come from? +

Directly from the open data of the trade register maintained by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and from the Official Gazette notices. We process this open data into a searchable, filterable format.

How up to date is the list? +

Notices are published on business days. The list is updated daily; the date shows the publication day of the notice.

What is the difference between a bankruptcy opening and lapsing? +

A bankruptcy opening means the company has been declared bankrupt. A bankruptcy lapses if the estate’s funds are insufficient for the costs of the proceeding – the proceeding then ends without distributions.

Has the company ceased for good? +

A company is considered ended only once the bankruptcy is completed and the company removed from the trade register. You can see the current status in the trade register (YTJ) via the company page.
